BUYING A USED CAR

If you are purchasing a used car privately:

  • It is advisable to have a mechanical check by an independent mechanic, for example, by the RACQ.
  • Search the Register of Encumbered Vehicles (REVS) to check that the vehicle is not stolen or under hire purchase, lease or a bill of sale.
  • Obtain a Safety Certificate from an Authorised Inspection Station. This states that the car is roadworthy.
  • Obtain a transfer of registration form from Queensland Transport.  Both buyer and seller must sign the form which is lodged by the buyer.
  • Ensure that you have compulsory third party insurance.
  • Check the Vehicle’s log books.

If purchasing through a dealer:

  • Check the licence of the dealer by asking to see a copy.
  • Check that the contract is completed correctly before signing. In particular note that the finance clause is completed.
  • The dealer must provide a cooling off period of one full business day.
  • Be sure that you read and understand the terms and conditions of the contract.
  • Obtain a written guarantee of title.
  • Obtain a written warranty. Dealers must give a warranty period of at least three months.
