BUYING A USED CAR

If you are purchasing a used car privately:
It is advisable to have a mechanical check by an independent mechanic, for example, by the RACQ.
Search the Register of Encumbered Vehicles (REVS) to check that the vehicle is not stolen or under hire purchase, lease or a bill of sale.
Obtain a Safety Certificate from an Authorised Inspection Station. This states that the car is roadworthy.
Obtain a transfer of registration form from Queensland Transport. Both buyer and seller must sign the form which is lodged by the buyer.
Ensure that you have compulsory third party insurance.
Check the Vehicle’s log books.
If purchasing through a dealer:
Check the licence of the dealer by asking to see a copy.
Check that the contract is completed correctly before signing. In particular note that the finance clause is completed.
The dealer must provide a cooling off period of one full business day.
Be sure that you read and understand the terms and conditions of the contract.
Obtain a written guarantee of title.
Obtain a written warranty. Dealers must give a warranty period of at least three months.
