ASSISTANCE FOR PEOPLE WITH A DISABILITY AND THE ELDERLY (The Adult Guardian)

The Adult Guardian is a person who can assist people who have an impaired decision making capacity in protect their rights and interests by;

  • acting as their decision maker,
  • giving advice and information on their behalf,
  • investigating allegations of neglect or abuse, whether physical, financial or emotional,
  • advocating on their behalf with family, service providers, government and other agencies.

The Adult Guardian is appointed by either the person with impaired capacity or the Guardianship and Administration Tribunal upon request by a concerned friend, relative or health care provider.

If you have reason to believe that a relative, friend or neighbour who is elderly or has a disability is being abused in any way by a friend, relative or carer, you can get assistance through the Elder Abuse Prevention Unit.
